Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Community Garden Collection
McLean Library has created a web-archive collection focusing on the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s programmatic COVID-19 response via #GrowTogetherPHS, a campaign to engage our audiences in gardening at home. In addition, the collection includes Philadelphia-area community gardening responses through social media sites as well as web-based documentation of recommendations for urban agriculture during COVID-19.
In response to COVID-19, the Pennsylvania Horticultural initiated #GrowTogetherPHS, a campaign to engage its audiences in gardening at home, converted its educational programs to online webinars, for example, for example PHS Tree Tenders Basic Training series, as well as Grow-to-Share (Harvest 2020); PHS Kids; Love the Earth 2020 and the Artful Gardener.
The Ahimsa House Garden, 5005 Cedar Avenue in West Philadelphia, is "...open to all throughout the daylight hours. The beds along the fence and the herb spiral are beds cultivated by Food Not Bombs, you are welcome to harvest and grow in those beds!" In response to COVID-19, the garden continues to be open with some restrictions and guidelines.

The Awbury Arboretum Community Garden, located at 6340 Ardleigh Street, with Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension in 1977, is the successor to Great Depression allotments and WWII Victory Gardens. The garden provides flowers, fruit and vegetables to local residents and annually donates substantial quantities of food to Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s City Harvest. What makes this garden even more special is that it is managed by a coordinating committee of neighbors of Awbury Arboretum. In response to COVID-19, the offices were closed and programs suspended.

Bethel AME Church of Ardmore started this Victory Gardens Community project with an aim to strengthen the community around it, serve the families who had gardens with fresh produce, and to supply food for the local food banks. César Andreu Iglesias Community Garden located at 427 Arlington Street, Kensington, was founded in 2012 by the Philly Socialists who expropriated parcels of vacant, tax-delinquent land and converted it into a community garden and people's park. Community gardens have been deemed essential by the City and the Community Garden is open with COVID-19 restrictions

The "Urban Farming" Program under D.I.T.O.'s "Segue Garden" division officially started June 6, 2014. In its conception, it was an effort to clean out 24 year vacant plot, 1636-38 Church Lane, but evolved into "an educational food resource."

Farm to Families is a collaborative community-based effort to improve the diets and health of children and families in North Philadelphia by addressing obstacles to healthy eating: access to nutritious food and access to information on nutrition and food preparation. St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children partners with the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative (LFFC) to source, package and deliver fresh food to Farm to Family community food hubs every week of the year. "In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, Food Moxie is more committed than ever to ensuring our vulnerable neighbors have access to healthy food. Founded in 2004, the Frankford Avenue Garden, located at 2614 Frankford Avenue in Kensington -- ".. There are no gates or fences, and All are welcome to come and enjoy the space from Dawn until Dusk any day, any season. The Garden sits on vacant Public Land and is maintained by The Friends of the Frankford Avenue Garden. "Free Haven Farms was established in 2017 in Lawnside, N.J. Lawnside is a suburban community, located in Camden County; not exactly where most people would expect to find a farm. But Micaiah had a vision before the couple purchased their home in Cynthia's hometown to create a homestead farm where they could raise their children and also be able to show others in their community how to grow their own food. Our location allows us and our produce to be accessible to our community. We started out in 2017 by operating a farmer's market on site on Sunday."

Founded in 1986 as a committee of the Westside Neighborhood Council, the Friends of Cloverly Park is an all-volunteer group committed to preserving and improving Cloverly Park as an asset to the quality of life in its surrounding community. Located at 5407 Wissahickon Avenue, Germantown, the Old Tennis Court Farm is maintained by the Old Tennis Court Farm gardeners and the Friends of Cloverly Park. The Park is open with restrictions in response to COVID-19.

Corinthian Gardens is another step in the development of Eastern State Penitentiary Park, conceived by neighbors and Bache Martin School parents who united in 1995 to clean up and improve the derelict exterior grounds of the historic prison. Along the Brown Street side, we created an expansive lawn and a playground from what had been an unsightly parcel of weeds, broken asphalt, debris, and an abandoned, deteriorated outbuilding of the prison. Neighbors may apply for personal garden plots within the Corinthian Gardens. In response to COVID-19, access is restricted.

FNC Community Learning Farm at 8th and Poplar is located in an ethnically diverse area of North Philadelphia’s East Poplar Neighborhood, this vibrant farm is improving access to affordable healthy food through their weekly farm market and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. In response to COVID-19, FNC closed its physical office in favor of remote programming

The Germantown Kitchen Garden, located at 215 E Penn Street, is half acre urban farm and nursery in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, growing a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and perennial plants for sale to neighbors through weekly farm stands, and to restaurants in search of the freshest greens. In response to COVID-19, customers of the farmstand were required to wear a mask and keep a 6′ distance from others while waiting their turn to shop.

Greensgrow is an educational urban farm and demonstration garden that provides an essential connection to food and nature in an urban community. Grounded In Philly came into existence as a civic project in 2013 in order to help Philadelphians find information about vacant land — in order to put it back in the hands of the community. In response to COVID-19, the website provides information and links to community gardeners and urban agriculture including updates from Philadelphia City Government, guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and recommendations for farm stands and farmers markets.

Located at 5150 Wayne Avenue, Southwest Germantown, the Hansberry Garden and Nature Center builds community by offering organic gardening, educational programs, and fresh, wholesome produce to an underserved neighborhood. Heritage Farm is located at 4300 Monument Road. "In 2011, Methodist Services revitalized 4 of its 22 acres to establish Heritage Farm, cultivating vegetables, flowers, berries and an orchard. Equipped with four high tunnels and a greenhouse that greatly extend the growing seasons, Heritage Farm strives to bring care, attention to detail and passion to the treatment of our soil, vegetables, community and customers." The Hicks Street Garden, located at 1835 South Hicks Street in the Newbold/Point Breeze neighborhood of South Philadelphia, is Neighborhood Gardens Trust community garden. Maintained entirely by neighborhood volunteers, the garden's mission is to create a welcoming, safe and beautiful place for all neighborhood residents. In response to COVID-19, gardeners continued to work with restrictions.

Located at 423 West Holly Street, West Powelton, the Holly Street Neighbors Community Garden is a living memorial to honor its founder Winnie Harris. The Holly Street gardeners commemorate her dedication to grow food organically. Community gardens have been deemed essential by the City and the Holly Street Garden is open with restrictions in response to COVID-19.

KleinLife Garden is located10100 Jamison Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. In 2010, KleinLife purchased a handful of raised beds, with the goal of growing and distributing fresh fruits and vegetables to encourage their seniors to eat more produce. Over time, this project has blossomed; with the support of Walmart and JFRE, KleinLife has built two hoop houses and planted an orchard at KleinLife’s Northeast Philadelphia location, producing nearly 2,000 pounds of produce in 2019 alone. In response to COVID-19, KleinLife started boxing up their produce and supplemental produce from Common Market in their new community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. "Weekly orders are on the upswing, with more and more individuals picking up boxes, safely and without contact, of vegetables, fruits, and even farm-fresh eggs."

"Liberty Lands Community Gardens has roughly 30 garden plots, each of which are “rented” and maintained on a year-to-year basis by individual gardeners or groups. There is a waiting list for plots. We encourage anyone interested in a plot to turn up for park workdays or volunteer to help in the public gardens at the park: current volunteers have first priority for available garden plots, and there are always opportunities to start gardening right away." In response to COVID-19, the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association offices are closed.

The Mantua Urban Peace Garden (MUPG) is a community space for residents to grow and share healthy, organic fruits and vegetables and build relationships with their neighbors. MUPG, located at 37th and Brown Streets, was established in May 2013, with support from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Currently, Mt. Vernon Manor CDC serves as MUPG’s fiscal sponsor and will hold a long-term lease for the land so that gardeners have a guaranteed space to grow produce and community. Response to COVID-19 is unknown.

Previously known as the Neighborhood Gardens Association (NGA), NGT was established in 1986 to address this problem by preserving and promoting community gardening across Philadelphia. NGT has preserved more than 38 community gardens, ranging from single lots to a 3.7- acre site, from vegetable and flower gardens to sitting parks. In response to COVID-19, the NGT issued “Guidelines for Gardening During COVID-19” on its website

The Newton Friends Meeting Garden Project is located at 808 Cooper Street in Camden, New Jersey. "Since it was established in 2007, the Garden Project has served more than 500 residents of the Garrett House, a halfway house under the supervision of the NJ Department of Corrections. Women from the Garrett House contribute to the community throughout the year by growing vegetables for the needy people and helping to maintain a garden on the grounds of Newton Monthly Meetinghouse, a historic landmark in the center of Camden"

Norris Square Neighborhood Projects urban gardens were created between 1980 and 2006 by the women of Grupo Motivos led by co-founders Iris Brown and Tomasita Romero, and community residents. Each of the six gardens represents and embodies the diversity of the Puerto Rican culture and West African diasporas in Philadelphia. Located in Kensington area of North Philadelphia, Norris Square Gardens are: the Butterfly Garden, 2141 N. Howard Street; Las Parcelas, 2248 N. Palethorp Street; El Batey, 169 W. Susquehanna Avenue; Jardín de Paz, 2201 N. 2nd Street; Raíces, 2217 N 2nd Street, and Villa Africána Colobó, 2263 N. Palethorp Street, Philadelphia. In response to COVID-19, all gardens are open with restrictions.

Novick Urban Farm, located at 3660 S Lawrence Street in South Philadelphia, was founded in 2012 by co-owner Gary Novick. It began small, with an initial goal of seeing if farming the land was indeed possible. "By the time he retired in 2016, it had successfully taken root. Seeds of what Gary planted -- both literal and figurative -- grew into an organization that each year feeds thousands of people in need while teaching just as many area children about the value of nutrition." South of Washington Avenue and east of the Schuylkill Expressway, the Point Breeze community has a long history of community gardening. Dozens of community green spaces were created here in the 1980s as one of PHS’s earliest Greene Countrie Townes. Mamie Nichols of the Point Breeze Federation worked with local residents to turn trash-filled vacant lots into gardens and parks to improve the neighborhood. When NGA was formed in 1986, Point Breeze was one of the first neighborhoods that NGA worked in to help preserve community gardens.
